Huntley falls in Sectional
Huntley (25-15), however, couldn’t solve Warren’s riddles. The Blue Devils built significant leads in both sets before the Red Raiders staged comebacks that ultimately fell short.
Sophomore Erin Erb and junior Kelsey DeWulf helped cut the Raiders’ Game 1 deficit to one, 20-19, with three kills and an ace between them, but couldn’t get Huntley over the hump.
Warren took a 13-3 advantage in Game 2, and led 24-16 before Huntley rallied to make it 24-21. The Raiders couldn’t find the five points they needed to force the third game, though. Not that the Red Raiders didn't try. They staged a remarkable rally to pull within 14-13, led by 2 kills from Emily Westermeyer, 2 kills and an ace by senior Erin Lyman and a kill and 2 blocks from Gundlach.
“I don’t think we came prepared for it,” senior outside hitter Emily Westermeyer said. “We’ve been doing so well, so I think we thought we would come in here and do well, too. We didn’t overlook Warren at all, but I don’t think we applied what we needed to.
“It was just frantic. We knew what we needed to do, and we just couldn’t do it.”

Huntley avenges last year with regional title
The Red Raiders dominated DeKalb in Game 3 from start to finish, wrapping up a regional title with a 25-17, 24-26, 25-13 win.
Emily Westermeyer led the way with 9 kills in the final of the Class 4A Jefferson regional Thursday night.
The Red Raiders (24-13), who avenged a loss to DeKalb in the regional finals last year, advance to the Belvidere North sectional where they will play Warren at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Warren defeated McHenry 31-29, 25-19 to win the McHenry regional.
"We just wanted to find the weaknesses and keep using them until they stopped working," said Westermeyer. "Offensively, we just tried to use some tips, mix up our shots, keep them on their toes and never let them know where we were going."
Huntley breezed through Game 1. After trailing early on, the Red Raiders took the lead for good with a 6-0 run midway through the game. Westermeyer served the last 5 points during the run. Later, a 5-0 run, with Shores serving the last 4 points, made it 22-17.

In the third set, Huntley got strong efforts from Emily Westermeyer and Erin Lyman on the attack and Rachel Shores in the back row and nearly staged its own comeback win. The Red Raiders trailed 15-9, stormed back and took a 22-21 lead on consecutive kills by Westermeyer and Erin Erb but two freebees left Boylan ahead again, then Varga’s kill and a quick set kill by Bryanna Weiskercher gave the Titans the title.
Huntley had 17 kills from Westermeyer in the title match and 33 for the day. Lyman, now healthy after a hand injury, had nine kills in the title match and 26 for the day. Shores had 21 digs in the finale and 76 digs on the day.

Huntley a strong second at own invite
Huntley fell just shy on Saturday of becoming the first girls volleyball team this season to knock off undefeated Rockford Boylan and Penn State-bound setter Bryanna Weiskircher.
After rallying from a 21-15 deficit in Game 3 to beat Marian Central in the semifinals of the 29th Annual Huntley Tournament, the hosts opened the title match against Boylan on fire. The Red Raiders did nearly everything right in winning the first game, 25-12, and their momentum translated to a 7-0 lead in Game 2.
The decisive third game was just as tight. Huntley took its last lead at 22-21 when Erin Erb slammed on overpass to the floor, but the Titans won the next 3 points. The last of Emily Westermeyer's 17 kills drew Huntley within 24-23, but Weiskircher sealed championship point by dumping a teammate's pass straight down to finalize a 25-23 win.

Huntley beat Fox Valley Conference Valley Division rival C-G, 25-11, 25-22, despite forfeiting libero Rachel Shores’ five service points and a Game 2 Trojans resurgence that nearly forced a third set.
The Trojans used an 8-2 late run to tie the score at 22 on Seymour’s block, but Huntley outside Emily Westermeyer hit down the line twice and Gundlach knocked down the final blow for match point.
“It was good to push because teams always come back stronger in the second game,” Westermeyer said. “Cary is always good with energy and hitting the spots, so we needed to play strong.”

Huntley - The Red Raiders were a Class A powerhouse in the 1990s, reaching the state quarterfinals four consecutive years between 1994-1997 and finishing fourth twice, third and second. But after losing in the quarterfinals in 2001, Huntley barely sniffed Bloomington. That was supposed to change in 2010 when Huntley was 32-4 heading into the regional final, but the Red Raiders were stunned by DeKalb 25-22, 25-21. Huntley, under second-year coach Karen Liss, is looking to return to those glory years behind a group that went 17-11 in 2012 and won the Great Lakes summer league. Top players this year include 5-9 senior outside hitter Emily Westermeyer, 5-8 senior outside Erin Lyman, 5-8 junior setter Kelsey Dewulf. 6-0 senior rightside Rachael Kisten and 5-5 senior libero Rachel Shores. Newcomers include 5-8 freshman outside hitter Ally Dion, younger sister of former Huntley great and 2011 Chicago Sun-Times All-Area selection Amy Dion (Maryland), and 5-10 junior middle Erin Erb.

Outlook: Where the Red Raiders were young last year, they are experienced. Huntley is riding a wave of confidence after winning the Great Lakes summer league and shedding the program’s rebuilding tag. Liss predicts her team will be tough this season, which will match its schedule. Outside of conference play, the Raiders head to stacked tournaments including joining South and C-G at the Asics Challenge at Mother McAuley in October.

A young Huntley squad stunned nationally-ranked Lone Peak Friday night in Chicago, upsetting what historically has been typicality on Day 1 of the Asics Challenge.
In its 26th year as one of the nation’s premier high school volleyball events, it is not uncommon for 3-seeds in the eight, three-team pools to knock off 2-seeds. And 2-seeds do occasionally defeat top seeds. But this reporter has been coming to the Challenge every year since 2002 and does not recall a 3-seed EVER defeating a 1-seed.
Huntley was the 22nd choice in the 24-team field for good reason. The Red Raiders came into the Lone Peak match 6-10 after an opening-round loss, in three, to Louisville Sacred Heart, and had the worst record of the teams playing the Challenge. Lone Peak, by contrast, was 13-1 and had moved to No. 57 in the latest national rankings.
That’s why, when Emily Westermeyer took the Kelsey DeWulf set and slammed the ball in the seam to complete the 25-17, 25-20 win, more than the Knights themselves were shocked.
“We won in two which was a great accomplishment for us,” said first-year coach Karen Liss. “Most of the time we’ve been going three, battling close and then losing in the third game. For us to come out and stay up and stay consistent, that’s been our goal the whole season.”
Liss thought Lone Peak was flat playing its first match of the night. She also thought that her Red Raiders took advantage of several unforced errors on the other side of the net.
“That’s a great team,” Liss said of the Knights. “We played great defense and our serve-receive was strong. Our libero, Rachel Shores, was phenomenal defensively.”

Asics Challenge: Third-seeded Notre Dame, playing its quarterfinal at Brother Rice across the parking lot, played even with surprising Huntley (finished 8th) until an 11-3 run broke open a close first set. Ogle, Thelen, Hallman, Klare and Micaela Stephensen were catalysts in Game 1 for the Pandas, a 25-17 win. Emily Westermeyer, Erin Lyman, Brittney Gundlach and Kelsey DeWulf had nice moments for Huntley, which lost the second set by the same score and would finish in eighth place after an 0-3 day. St. Francis bounced back from the three-set loss to JCA to sweep Huntley for seventh place.
9/30/12 NW Herald
Asics Challenge: At Chicago, Huntley won one of its five matches, finished 8th in the Gold bracket out of 24 teams, defeating Lone Peak (Utah), 25-17, 25-20. Emily Westermeyer led the Red Raiders (7-12) with nine kills in the victory, and Rachel Shores added 17 digs.
9/30/12 Daily Herald
Huntley was the surprise story of Friday pool play.
The young Red Raiders, seeded 22nd out of 24 teams with the worst record of the teams playing at the Asics, stunned nationally ranked Lone Peak (Utah) 25-17, 25-20 to make the Gold playoffs and finished in 8th place.
On Saturday Huntley (7-10) dropped a 25-17, 25-17 decision to Notre Dame Academy (Ky.) and lost to Pius XI (Wisc.) 25-10, 17-25, 25-18 before falling to St. Francis. Matching up against the best still was what Huntley coach Karen Liss hoped for.
“This was a great opportunity for us to see some of the best of the best,” Liss said. “Our goal this whole season is playing consistent and we showed Friday night when playing consistent and minimizing errors what we could do. When that doesn’t we struggle against teams like St. Francis. You can’t give a team like that four or five points and expect to come back. They’re too good.”
Liss noted that her team’s serve-receive was flawless Friday and thought outsides Emily Westermeyer and Erin Lyman played consistently all weekend.
“We passed on system and we could run our fast offense,” Liss said. “We are a fast team. We’re not a team that’s going to bounce balls and throw them down; we’re not that big. But offensively we spread it out and run a fast offense. Last night our opponents didn’t know where the ball was going.”

Huntley has been a traditional power in the FVC Valley, but its success depends on the development of players like freshman middle Erin Erb and sophomore Kelsey DeWulf to complement returning standout middle blocker Hailey Vitacco, junior outside hitter Erin Lyman, and junior hitter Emily Westermeyer.
“Our quickness and scrappy defense will make us very competitive,” Whitehouse said.

Huntley Red Raiders
Coach: Karen Liss (seventh season, first at Huntley)
Conference: Fox Valley (Valley)
Last year: 31-7, 9-3 FVC Valley
Top players: seniors Haley Ream (MB), Hailey Vitacco (MB); juniors Rachel Kisten (RH), Erin Lyman (OH), Eilish Reagan (DS), Rachel Shores (DS), Emily Westermeyer (OH); sophomore Kelsey DeWulf (S); freshman Erin Erb (MB)
Outlook: A complete overhaul. That’s the best description of the Huntley girls volleyball program this year. New coach Karen Liss takes over Michelle Jakubowski, now the school’s athletic director. Liss inherits a rebuilding program following the graduation of multiple senior stars from last season’s sectional finalist, including hitter Samantha Boesch (Wake Forest) and all-area team honorary captain Amy Dion (Maryland). Senior Hailey Vitacco (6-0) is the only member of the rotation returning, though defender Erin Lyman and Emily Westermeyer did see some playing time. The Red Raiders get an influx of new blood, including junior right-side hitter Rachel Kisten (6-0), sophomore setter Kelsey DeWulf and freshman middle Erin Erb (5-11). “We have a lot of rebuilding to do,” Liss said. “This year we’re really the underdog. Nobody really expects much from us, so I hope we can come in and surprise a lot of teams. This group works very hard. A strength is our speed. We can catch some teams off-guard.”

Huntley
Coach Karen Liss (1st Season)
2011 record:31-7 overall, 9-3 (FVC Valley)
Top returners: Hailey Vitacco Sr., MH; Emily Westermeyer, Jr., OH; Erin Lyman, Jr., OH
Key Newcomers: Kelsey DeWulf So., S; Rachel Shores, Jr., L
What to expect: Former Hampshire coach Liss takes over a Huntley club that has won 20 or more games in four straight seasons. Vitacco a Division-I prospect, Westermeyer and Lyman, which are go to outside hitters, could lead the Red Raiders past that win total once again. But Huntley will have to make up for the loss of several key seniors from last year's 31-win team."We are a young team and have to rebuild from losing (those) seniors," Liss said. "But the girls are a very dedicated group who want to be successful."

Red Raiders defeat Barrington to win 2011 Regional Championship
Huntley emerges from the shadows
Bob Narang on volleyball | Chicago Tribune | September 22, 2011
Residing in the far northwest suburbs, hidden behind the massive Cary-Grove shadow, Huntley quietly is having a promising season.
The Red Raiders won their first 11 matches but lacked a meaningful victory. Everything pointed to Huntley's perfect season coming to an end Tuesday, when Cary-Grove easily won the first game and led 15-7 in the second.
The No. 8 Red Raiders (13-0, 6-0 Fox Valley Valley) responded with a stunning rally to defeat the No. 6 Trojans 21-25, 25-23, 25-22. The Raiders' victory sent ripples through the national volleyball scene, ending Cary-Grove's 59-match regular season winning streak, dating back to a Oct. 3, 2009 loss to Waukesha Memorial from Wisconsin in the Asics Challenge. Cary-Grove's streak started with a two-game victory over Huntley on Oct. 6, 2009.
The Red Raiders also stopped the Trojans' 25-match conference winning streak. The last time the Trojans lost a conference match was to Crystal Lake South on Oct. 16, 2008.
